摘要

This article reviews the latest mechanics characterization of the cutting of particulate-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs), including the effects of cutting tools and cutting parameters on machined surface integrity. The authors pointed out that the cutting optimization of the composites towards high surface integrity is still challenging because of the complicated interactions among the particles, matrix and cutting tool. The interactions bring about particle fracture, particle-matrix debonding, matrix tearing and wear of cutting tools. The discussion demonstrated that if a numerical analysis can properly accommodate the random factors such as the shape and distribution of the reinforcement particles, the numerical simulation can reasonably predict the material removal and surface generation mechanisms. The authorsanticipate that the application of AI technologies in the near future may effectively facilitate the surface integrity characterization of machined surfaces of MMCs.
